A visit to Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden

The peak of the rhododendron blooming nicely coincides with Mothers’ Day, so my Portland daughter and I visited it today.  Google maps led us astray, but we got there anyway.

The flowers were in various stages of blooming, so their season seems fairly extended; still there were not many bushes/trees with no blooms. While there appeared to be lots of each individual color, when we went to see the judged flowers and saw them side by side, there were very subtle variations. Because to me they all look great, I can’t help but wonder what raises a couple over the rest to get first place, etc.

The park is large–nine acres, I think, and wandering paths make it seem yet larger. I think I’ll let the pictures do the talking.
